Increasing functionally by opening up my unique work space. Difficult but worth it!

Every inch counts!

The space here in the back of Fulcrum Gallery is a little tight to host the hot shop I am trying to build, so every inch counts. To accommodate a functional working space I had to remove a wall that I had previously built as the halway through the length of the building. Opening up this space meant that I suddenly had a 17 foot span that needed a support header.

I had consulted with a number of my contractor friends and a large 12 inch header beam was all they could come up with as an acceptable solution to support the newly created loft space above the work floor. Now that just wasn’t going to work for me. 12 in. beam in a 6 in ceiling deck meant 6 inches were going to be hanging out somewhere either above or below totally ruining the streamline low profile look that I enjoy. Now contractors are a straightforward types not exactly the creative problem solvers that I was looking for. After a number of weeks I came to me, steel! I know I beams come in all sizes so it was just a matter of finding the one that was right for me!

Something about purchasing a steel I beam really boosts my manhood!

Once I had procured my I beam I married a couple of wood elements to either side for securing it in place. The next step involved cutting a channel the hoisting it in place using a number or ratchet straps. The beam it’s self weighed over 200 pounds so this was not an easy task. Once in place I secured the two supporting members on either side and we are ready to go!

Once the dry wall is complete this modification will be totally invisible creating a streamline lo profile support to an incredibly useful storage loft.
